Pyrgi is the largest and perhaps the most impressive of the Mastic Villages of Chios. Known for its elaborate “xysta” (greek idiomatic for scratched technique) – geometric designs that adorn the walls of the houses – Pyrgi is a village that seems to have stepped out of another era.

The central tower-like building in the center of the village (from which it took its name) was the last refuge for the inhabitants in case of invasion.

Every house in Pyrgi is unique. The walls of the residences are decorated with geometric patterns created using the “xysta” (greek idiomatic for scraping) technique on black and white plaster layers. This technique is unique in Greece and captures the aesthetic identity of its inhabitants.
